What to know when designing your dream kitchen or bathroom
Choosing the right tile is essential when designing your dream kitchen or bathroom, but the process can be stressful. I’ve met homeowners who spent hours trying to select the best tile for them, only to finish feeling stressed out and unsatisfied.
But that doesn’t need to happen to you.
Here are some things to consider for a stress-free tile selection experience.
Do your research beforehand.
Before you begin browsing for tiles, you should have an idea of the style you want. This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed at the selection of tiles when you shop at a tile distributor.
You can do research on sites like Pinterest, Instagram, and Houzz to search for specific styles, such as the following:
- Contemporary
- Coastal
- Farmhouse
- Modern
- Mid-century modern
- Traditional
- Transitional
I encourage you to take pictures of the styles and designs you like. When you go to pick out your tile, bring those pictures with you. Often, tile distributors like ours have designers who will assist you in choosing something you’ll love. Showing them these pictures during your selection appointment will help them know what to recommend.
Know your lifestyle.
Your home’s tile should mesh with how you live. For example, if you cook a lot, you will likely want a kitchen backsplash that is resistant to staining. If you live with young kids, you will likely want to choose a honed floor tile that has grip to it, instead of using a slippery polished tile. This is especially true for tiles in your bathrooms.
Understand how often you plan to clean it.
Natural stone, polished porcelain, or white colors all require you to clean them more often. These can look great, and they may be worth the extra upkeep.
If you prefer a less frequent cleaning schedule, I recommend going with a porcelain in darker tones or honed finishes. These tiles can also look great, but typically require much less upkeep to look their best.
